Therapy in English, in São Paulo or online

Some things can only be said in your own language.
Living in another country asks a lot of you. A new language, a new workplace culture, distance from the people who know you best — and, often, the quiet feeling that you have to hold it all together because moving here was your choice. Therapy in your mother tongue gives those experiences a place to land. Nuance, humor, hesitation — the things that carry what you actually feel — don’t survive translation well. In session, you shouldn’t have to work as a translator of yourself. I offer psychotherapy in English for expats and internationals living in Brazil — in person in São Paulo or online from anywhere.

What brings people here

  • The transition itself: culture shock, isolation, the identity questions that surface when familiar references disappear
  • Corporate pressure: leadership demands, expat assignments, career crossroads far from your support network
  • Relationships: partnerships strained by relocation, parenting between cultures, distance from family
  • And what would bring you to therapy anywhere: anxiety, low mood, repeating patterns, the sense that something needs attention

Who you'll be talking to

I’m Marcos Alencar, Psychoanalyst and Psychologist  (CRP 06/30117). Before dedicating myself fully to the clinic, I spent years as an executive and entrepreneur, with graduate work at MIT — so the world you navigate professionally is one I know from the inside, not from textbooks.

My approach is analytic: we work with your history, your patterns, and what repeats — at your pace, without ready-made protocols. Sessions are available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

How it works

We start with a free 30-minute conversation, online, with no commitment — a chance to meet, talk about what brings you, and decide together whether we’re a good fit. Time zones and language adjust automatically in the booking calendar below.

Sessions are 50 minutes, weekly as a rule, in person in São Paulo or online. Fees depend on your country and currency and are discussed openly in the first conversation.

FAQ

Is therapy online as effective as in person?

For most people, yes. What sustains therapy is the quality of the listening and the regularity of the work, not the room. Many of my patients live in different cities and countries.

Then you’ll fit right in. Sessions can move between English, Portuguese, and Spanish — whatever serves what you need to say.

Fees vary by country and currency and are shared in the free first conversation. Rates for weekly sessions are discussed individually.

Yes. Sessions are confidential, in accordance with the ethical standards of the Brazilian Federal Council of Psychology.

Individual Analysis is an ongoing process, with no set end date, aimed at in-depth self-knowledge. Brief Therapy has a defined focus and duration — around 10 to 16 sessions — and works on one specific issue, such as stress, pressure at work, or a career transition. In the first conversation, we decide together which path makes more sense for your moment. And it’s possible to move from one to the other.

Yes, with at least 24 hours’ notice, at no cost. Late cancellations may be charged, as the time slot is reserved for you.
