My background

A journey shaped by listening, continuous study, and clinical experience.

More than 20 years listening to and caring for people through different stages of life.

Marcos Alencar, psicólogo e psicanalista em São PauloI am a psychologist and psychoanalyst, offering in-person sessions in São Paulo and online sessions for people in Brazil and abroad. My professional journey began at the age of 17, at Instituto Jean Piaget, where my studies and training already included psychoanalysis. It was there that my interest in psychic life began — an interest that deepened over the years through psychology, psychoanalysis, clinical practice, and ongoing training.I graduated in Psychology from Universidade Paulista in 1989. My background also includes postgraduate studies in Mental Health at the Department of Preventive Medicine of the University of São Paulo Medical School (USP), as well as continuous study and clinical training in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Among the experiences that shaped the early years of this path was my work at Comunidade Terapêutica Enfance, a pioneering reference in Brazilian child psychiatry.

How I understand clinical work

My work is guided by psychoanalysis. This means that I do not follow the same script for everyone or begin with predetermined answers. Each person is listened to in the context of their own history, conflicts, relationships, and the moment they are living through. The direction of the work is gradually built over the course of the sessions. You do not need to arrive with everything organized, know where to begin, or be able to explain clearly what you are feeling. The process takes into account not only what is said, but also the repetitions, contradictions, silences, conflicts, and changes that emerge over time. The aim is not to offer generic advice or quick solutions, but to create the conditions for each person to understand their experience in a different way and to find new ways of positioning themselves in relation to it.I consider it essential to build a relationship based on trust, respect, and the freedom to speak without judgment. Each person arrives with their own history and their own pace, and the work begins from that singularity.

Training and clinical references

My clinical training is rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition and continues to develop through study, supervision, clinical practice, and my own experience of analysis.Freud remains a fundamental reference for understanding the unconscious, psychic conflicts, and the repetitions that run through a person’s life. Dialogue with other psychoanalytic authors and traditions has also broadened my attention to language, relationships, the symbolic dimension of experience, and the different ways in which each person organizes their psychic life.My contact with body-based practices and group processes has also contributed to an understanding of psychic life that is not limited to rational thought or to the manifest content of words. These references guide my listening, but they do not form a rigid model to be applied. I am less concerned with fitting someone into a general explanation than with understanding how that person lives, suffers, relates to others, makes choices, and seeks to make sense of their own experience.

Clinical work, career, and contemporary life

My professional background also includes many years working as an executive and entrepreneur in companies and projects related to strategy, innovation, and technology, as well as training in strategy and innovation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — MIT.This experience gave me first-hand knowledge of the demands of performance, leadership, decision-making under pressure, professional transitions, and the constant changes that shape the world of work.It also informs my listening when issues arise around professional conflict, career changes, pressure to perform, burnout, loss of meaning, leadership, difficult decisions, or tensions between personal and professional life. This is not career counseling. The clinical question is different: to understand how work participates in a person’s identity, relationships, desire, choices, and in the way each person recognizes themselves and constructs their place in the world.

The experience of being in analysis

I was in analysis for many years, so I also know this process from the perspective of someone seeking help: the hesitation before beginning, the time it can take for certain words to emerge, the periods of doubt, and the importance of finding a space where it is possible to speak without haste, without judgment, and without the pressure to have immediate answers. That experience has deeply shaped the way I receive each person in my practice. Often, someone begins therapy without being able to explain exactly what they are feeling or even what they are looking for. Understanding what is happening is already part of the process itself.

How I work

I work with people going through unresolved conflicts, major life changes, separations, grief, relationship difficulties, or questions about their professional path. People also often seek therapy when certain situations keep repeating without a clear understanding of why, when a decision feels difficult to work through, or when certain experiences and feelings have not yet found words.Sessions can take place as Individual Psychoanalysis, without a predetermined duration, or , without a predetermined duration, or Short-Term Therapy, when there is a more specific issue to be worked through over an agreed period of time.I work with adults, including Brazilians living abroad, foreigners living in Brazil, and people whose lives move between different cultures and languages.Sessions can be held in English, Portuguese and Spanish, online or in person in São Paulo.
